caution regards Heathrow T2 opening

Caution Regarding Heathrow T2 Opening

With the opening of Heathrow’s new Terminal 2 less than three months away the airport’s Development Director, John Holland-Kaye, has issued words of caution about its first few days of operation.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday Mr Holland-Kaye warned that, initially, it will be difficult to deliver the: “perfect passenger experience.”

The new terminal is due to open on June 4 and will undergo extensive testing before the big day arrives.  However, looking back to the difficult births suffered by other major airport terminals, including Heathrow’s Terminal 5 in 2008, Mr Holland-Kaye said: “I cannot guarantee the opening day will be perfect but look at Terminal 5, after a few weeks everything was running smoothly.”

He added: “I don’t think anyone underestimates how big a challenge this opening is.  The chances of a smooth opening are low but mitigation plans are in place.”

United Airlines will be the first carrier to move in to Terminal 2 – also be known as The Queen’s Terminal.  The rest of its Star Alliance partners will gradually move in over the next few months with all 22 airlines are in place by the end of November.  Aer Lingus, Germanwings and Virgin Atlantic Little Red will also operate from Terminal 2.
